What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach developed to help people process and recover from distressing experiences, including trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess memories that are stored in a way that continues to cause distress.
EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and Health Canada as an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma-related conditions. It is used with adults, adolescents, and children, and is increasingly applied to anxiety, phobias, grief, and performance-related stress beyond its original trauma focus.
Many clients seek EMDR after years of talk therapy have not produced the results they were hoping for. The approach works at a neurological level, which is why some clients report significant shifts in a relatively small number of sessions.

What to Expect from EMDR Therapy
EMDR is typically delivered in phases. Before any reprocessing begins, Lauren will spend time building a thorough understanding of your history, your goals, and ensuring you have stabilization skills in place, including techniques for managing distress between sessions.
Reprocessing sessions involve bringing a specific memory or target to mind while following bilateral stimulation. The process does not require you to describe the memory in detail, which many clients find significant. After reprocessing, Lauren will guide you through a stabilization phase to close each session.
Most clients begin to notice changes in how they relate to the target memory within a few sessions. Full treatment length varies depending on the complexity of the presenting concerns.
