What Is Depression, and How Does Therapy Help?

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition that affects how you think, feel, and function in daily life. It goes beyond low mood — symptoms can include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and often interfere with work, relationships, and everyday responsibilities.

Therapy for depression gives you a structured, confidential space to understand what is contributing to your depression and to develop practical tools for managing it. Research consistently supports psychotherapy as an effective treatment for depression, both on its own and alongside other care. Common therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and somatic-based approaches, depending on what fits your situation best.

Depression looks different for everyone. Some people experience it as persistent low mood; others notice it as irritability, emotional numbness, or physical fatigue. Whatever your experience, working with a counsellor can help you make sense of it.

How the Counsellors at Vernon Counselling Approach Depression

At Vernon Counselling, our team of registered clinical counsellors and registered social workers takes an individualized approach to depression treatment. Rather than applying a single method to every client, our counsellors draw on multiple evidence-based frameworks, including CBT, somatic experiencing, narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches, to match the work to what you actually need.

Our practitioners, including Tina Comeau, Lauren Howard, Monja Brink, and Niquita Eng, bring a range of training backgrounds and areas of focus. This means clients can be matched with a counsellor whose experience aligns with their specific concerns, whether that involves depression related to trauma, grief, life transitions, relationship difficulties, or chronic stress.

We also offer sliding-scale sessions for clients who would otherwise be unable to access care due to financial hardship. You can learn more about our team on our counsellors page.

ABOUT US

What to Expect from Depression Counselling at Vernon Counselling

Your first session is primarily an intake: your counsellor will ask about your current concerns, your history, and what you are hoping to get from therapy. This helps them understand your situation and begin forming a plan that fits your goals.

From there, sessions typically involve exploring the thoughts, patterns, and circumstances that are contributing to your depression, alongside building specific skills for managing symptoms. Depending on your progress and goals, counselling can be short-term and skills-focused or longer-term and more exploratory.

Sessions are 50 minutes and held in person at our Vernon office at #202, 2808 – 48 Ave. Book your first appointment directly through our online booking system.
